How to Care for Fiber Optic Pigtail Connectors

When it comes to fiber optic cables, connectors and optical transceivers, it’s important to know how to care for them. That way, you can keep them working properly without damaging them. One type of fiber cable is the fiber pigtail. It usually has an optical connector pre-terminated on one end and bare fiber on the other end.The light-carrying portion of an optical fiber is minuscule (about 1 um in diameter), so even a few specks of dust particles can have a huge impact on the performance of your system. So keeping your connectors clean is critical for reliable signal transmission. There are several ways to clean your optical fiber connectors, including dry cleaning, wet cleaning and using isopropyl alcohol.

Each of these methods has its advantages and disadvantages, but a combination of these techniques is usually the most effective.Wet Cleaning: For both exposed and connector mated adapters, insert an appropriate size cleaning swab tip moistened with fiber optic cleaning solution (or > 91% Isopropyl Alcohol) inside the adapter until a contact is made with the connector on opposite end. Rotate the cleaning swab with medium pressure in one circular motion as it is pulled out of the adapter.Once the adapter is cleaned, remove the cleaning swab and inspect the end-face for contamination. If the end-face is contaminated, repeat the wet cleaning process until the end-face is free of debris and clean.Cleaning is one of the most important tasks involved in the maintenance of fiber optic systems. Tiny deposits of dirt, dust particles and other contaminants can significantly affect the signal quality of an optical link.In the past, many technicians discontinued the use of solvents and instead went with dry cleaning techniques only.

Wiping a dry wipe or dry clicker tool on the end face of an optical fiber connector generates a static charge (technically known as a triboelectric charge) that attracts dust to the center of the connector face. This is why many technicians now prefer to wet clean their end faces with a fiber optic cleaning fluid. This wet cleaning method breaks the static bond between the end face and the contaminant, and allows the wipes, mechanical clicker tools and other cleaning devices to work more effectively. To keep your fiber optic pigtails clean, there are several cleaning accessories that you can use to remove dust and particles that may cause damage to the end face of the connector.

Optical wipes, swabs and cleaning pens are some of the best tools that you can use to clean your fiber optic pigtails. These products are available in a variety of different sizes and styles to suit your specific needs. There are also kits that contain all of the necessary tools for a fiber optic technician to clean their network quickly, reliably and inexpensively.One-push fiber cleaners are a necessity in any fiber optic technician’s kit. These products are made of densely stranded microfibers with anti static resin that make it easy to push and engage the connector with one-push to initiate cleaning of the fiber optic connectors. There are various one-push cleaners on the market to clean most of the connector types with 2.5mm and 1.25mm ferrules including LC, SC, ST and MU. Some of them also support MTP/MPO based connectors.
